The Use of RolePlay and Narative Text to Teach Speaking Skill
Abstract
Speaking skill is one of the most important aspects of English language learning because it enables students to communicate effectively in various situations. However, many EFL students still face difficulties in speaking due to limited vocabulary, low self-confidence, and speaking anxiety. Although role-play has been widely recognized as an effective technique for improving speaking skills, studies integrating role-play with narrative texts remain limited. This study aims to describe the use of role-play through narrative texts in teaching speaking skills and to explore students’ perceptions of its implementation. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using classroom observation and semi-structured interviews with eleventh-grade Hospitality students at SMKN 8 Surabaya. The findings revealed that role-play enhanced students’ confidence, participation, and understanding of narrative texts. Despite challenges related to vocabulary, grammar, and speaking anxiety, teacher guidance helped students overcome these difficulties. Therefore, narrative text-based role-play can be considered an effective strategy for developing EFL students’ speaking skills.
